Rule #1 The e-collar is not for teaching, it used to correct for not performing known commands. Rule #2 If you are planning on using a collar your dog should be wearing it as soon as he/she is strong enough to wear it during your training sessions (3 months and up) DO NOT TURN IT ON!!!! just let the pup get used to it around his/her neck Rule #3 Formalize each command before you start conditioning to the command Rule #4 Start at the lowest setting and work your way up the collar until you get the sign you've reached a point you think is enough, The dog usually will do anything from twitching his/her ear to slight vocalization (bark) GETTING STARTED!!! The dog again should be through steps rules/steps 1-3 We will start with sit. Asuming the dog has been formalized to sit he should already have some pressure to make him comply with the heel stick, if not FORMALIZE NOW!!! OK, put your dog on lead and a pinch collar, place your ecollar in the proper place (right behind the ears, and just tight enough to to slip 2-3 fingers under), the collar should be in front of the the pinch collar. oh the transmitter should be on the underside of the neck Asumming the collar is on, put the collar is on the lowest setting walk w/ your dog at heel, tell the dog to sit and tap the dog on the honches, the scenerio should play out like this: SIT/TAP repeat a few times Do this a couple of times, then add the collar (on the lowest setting) SIT/TAP/NICK timing is important repeat several times then remove the TAP so it's SIT/NICK Work your way up the collar and increasing with moderate stick pressure repeating the step above until you get your "sign" from the dog REMEMBER the ear twitch or the slight vocalization and of course COMPLIENCE!! work on sit at this level with no "TAPS" You can also add the whistle at this stage as well SIT/BEEP/TAP SIT/BEEP/TAP/NICK once he understands it will be BEEP/NICK (this is not a remote sit but a foundation for teaching it) I'll do here next time Last edited by Flying T Retrievers; 10-13-2005 at 09:52 AM. |

I think I did it wrong. Here's what I did. I took my collar out of the box, charged it for 14 hrs, put it on my 14 week old puppy and pushed the button just to see what would happen. I said "here" several times, but the dog didn't listen, he just hollered real loud for about 10 seconds and then ran off. That was 3 weeks ago....Do you think he will come back? |

I think they are just playin with ya. I think that was very good info. My wife is dead set against me using one on our lab and I am sure trying, but it seems she knows the comands but she just is too dang bullheaded to do it. If I get riled and yell she just looks at me and will not come back. I think it may just be a case of the I don't like you, you are the one who yells at me. ( I am the disiplanarian I think she knows the deeper voice means bussiness) Any tips to get her to obey without a shock colar? If you want this on a new thread let me know.

Jon, There are a couple of things you need to know about me before you start jumping to conclusions.....I'm almost NEVER SERIOUS and most of these guys on here know that. Occasionally I might have some useful information simply because I've been training dogs off and on for about 35 years. I have trained with and without e-collar and well as ff and non ff. I participate in HRC hunt tests and am President of our local HRC club. Tim and I are in that club and know each other quite well. Cahoun knows me and Tim from another forum as well. Dog people tend to become like a large family. I serve on 2 hunt test committees and have been involved in setting up and approving numerous ht's in Texas and Arkansas. I have just completed a judges training seminar and passed the HRC judges test and will be judging in the fall. I am an avid duck hunter and have been hunting ducks in this area with a dog for over 30 years. This is your site, and if you want to keep everything serious and focused, you certainly don't need me to participate. No hard feelings! | |

Tim...that was a GREAT post. Whether you get any serious replies or not, there will be people that read this thread that will get a TON of good information on collar conditioning. Thanks for the work you put into it!!

Jon, Dman is nothing more than a troublemaker...a pot stirrer...an instigator...a menace...a...a...well you get the picture. He's just a no-good. Riff-raff like Dman needs to be swept out the door--and quickly. You give him an inch--he'll take a mile. He makes a hemorrhoid look like a small affair. Trouble I tell you. Problems from the word go. Send him packin'. (Just kidding.) By the way...great tip, Flying T!!! |
